At the National Archives we are about to restrict the use of USB memory
devices for transferring data which needs to be protected. In future, we
will only allow the transfer of such data on encrypted devices. It is,
however, important not to prevent legitimate use of such devices. My idea
of hell is turning up to give a talk only to find that my nice Powerpoint
slides are on an encrypted usb device and cannot be read.
As I am sure most of you are aware, the Cabinet Office is conducting a
review of Data Handling in government which will be reporting in the spring
and it will be important to be aware of any recommendations of that report
in looking at such issues. The interim findings can be seen at
http://www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/reports/data_handling.aspx

Subject: Encryption / USB policies
Hi,
I have another query for your lovely helpful people. I suspect this
might be relevant to others, so feel free to reply to the list.
1. How is it possible to encrypt CDs? Does your organisation have a
policy or standard way of doing this?
2. Do any of you have policies on the use of USBs in your organisation
i.e. do you allow or prevent staff from using their own USBs or do staff
have to use ones approved by you, and how do you control the use of
them?
In common with other NHS organisations we are looking into encryption
within our Trust as it is an increasingly important topic for obvious
reasons.
Thanks
Catherine
