John Newlove is certainly one of the poets I'd include in a 50 best
since 1945. He is an interesting case because he emerged so quickly,
even his early poems incredibly fine, then after about a decade, went
mostly quiet for a long long time. I was astonished a few years ago to
find a young poet who was studying Canadian poetry with me had barely
heard of him. Therefor, this new Selected seems necessary, so that
younger writers/readers might have a chance to acquaint themselves
with the work of a poet Michael Ondaatje calls 'the best of us.'
The local paper told me to keep the review short, so I did, but if
anyone's interested in getting just a small sense of Newlove's work,
it's here:

Reviewing is something I still enjoy doing, when it comes right down
to it....

Nothing I'd read
prepared me for a body this unfair.
