I realize now that my thinking about education has been hugely affected
by a massive and unresolved confusion about the nature of *talent*; and
that Oxford is to blame for this. I have never quite rid myself of the
habit of seeing degree-level education as something for talented people,
and talent as the kind of thing that my more talented peers at Oxford
had. Hence my dissatisfaction with DMU, where almost nobody displayed
those sorts of talents; although they may have kept them hidden, or had
others instead.
