Tracy,
Psoralen is a plant extract used in dermatology in the treatment of certain
skin diseases, e.g. psoriasis, using PUVA therapy. For this it is generally
taken orally in table form and makes the patient's skin extremely UV
sensitive. UVA is then used to depress the activity of the immune system and
thus reduce the actual symptoms.
Psoralens can also be applied topically for those patients who cannot
tolerate the oral dose.
There is some reference in my literature that it should not be administered
to pregnant women due to a possible effect on the fetus.
What you do not state in your e-mail is the concentration in the solution.
This could have a significant bearing on the potential exposure level.
However, given adequate personal protective equipment, i.e. rubber gloves
that are long enough, I would not envisage that a risk assessment would
exclude a pregnant person from continuing to work with the substance.
Hope this is of some help.
Regards
Chris
