Dear Friend,
Freedom and Spirit
Music and art from the Zimbabwe Shona traditions
5.30pm - 8pm Friday 11 January 2008
To celebrate the arrival of a contemporary stone sculpture, at
Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, we are delighted to invite you to
'Freedom and Spirit' an evening of Zimbabwean culture and music.
This free event will showcase a performance by Grace Nicol and Warren
Canham, two very accomplished mbira (thumb piano) players from
Edinburgh.
In addition, Grace and Warren will give a presentation about their
recent travels to Zimbabwe. Working alongside Grass Roots Theatre
Company, they delivered a series of workshops in four schools across the
Masvingo area and at a weekend children's festival.
The work in which they contributed, involved teaching children about
their own culture, social issues such as Aids and human rights and
British culture.
There will also be a unique opportunity to meet the artist of the stone
sculpture, Hilary Manuhwa and hear more about his work. The sculpture
entitled 'Freedom' is one of four pieces commissioned through the
Engaging Refugee and Asylum Seekers (ERAS) project. Each partner in the
project worked with a different artist to address the issues faced by
people who seek asylum. The sculpture is on loan from National Museums
Liverpool and will be shown at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens until
13 January 2008.
