John - at the colliery where I worked there was an over-rope double-
track endless system that operated for about three-qurters of a mile
from the shaft. Tubs were hauled in sets of eight, full tubs on one
track and empties on the other track and the chains that connected them
to the ropes were called 'clips', sometimes 'ham-bone clips' to
differentiate them from the clips that were used on the under-rope
endless systems.
