Hi Polona
I don't think this is midwife developed the profession but I do have a reference for an illiterate Irish midwife Mary Dunally who in 1738 is reputed to have performed the first recorded caesarean section in the British Isles where both mother and infant survived.
The reference for this is Samuel Merriman Difficult Partuition London 1820 p 163. Though I think Donnisson was where I originally found the reference
Good luck
Rhona

Subject: famous midwives
Hello!
As a part of my PhD thesis about the professionalization of midwifery, I would also like to mention history of midwifery and famous midwives that were of great importance for the development of the profession. I'm aware of the Agnodice, but I do not know any others. Can you help me? Is there also a picture of them?
Best wishes,
Polona, midwife from Slovenia
