I am an undergraduate at Kent at Canterbury University undergoing my final
year Archaeology project. I have been investigating a suspected 13th -14th
manorial site near Eastry in Kent which also has the remains of a chapel of
ease. I have just completed the survey and there is a curious feature that I
would appreciate some suggestions as to its identification. It is a circular
mound about 1m high with the centre scooped out. The mound is surrounded by
a shallow ditch with the diameter of the feature including the ditch approx.
19m. Suggestions so far are a Windmill base or a Dovecote. The location of
this site is on the east side of a valley about half way up so the
possibility of a Windmill to me seems unlikely but I am sure stranger things
have happened. If anyone has any suggestions or can point me in a direction
where I can find more information I would be very grateful.
