Hi Tehmina
At the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) we use Verizon
Business services http://www.verizonbusiness.com/uk/ to host our
webservers and manage the domain firewalls, (but our office network
infrastructure is externally hosted elsewhere - eventually these two
server groups may be brought together but I don't think we shall
envisage having anything back in house, ever.)
We have a Service Level Agreement (SLA) with Verizon which allows the
web team here direct access to our servers through a secure VPN
connection, and for any of our contractors / developers by another,
separate secure process if they need to work on anything. The bandwidth
and data transfer rates are set in bands, and if we regularly go above
them we renegotiate the baseline of charges, but for an ad hoc rise
there is just an extra incidental cost on the monthly bill.
We do not need to do any routine patching of the servers (we run on
Windows IIS) ourselves as this, and various monitoring services and 24/7
support is handled by Verizon.
We do have to deal with patching of specific applications (or contract
our web developers to do so) but this is entirely within our control and
we decide what is cost effective - we can often ask Verizon to do it,
but at a greater cost than the application developer.
kind regards

Subject: [MCG] Hosting websites externally
I am wondering how many of you host your websites externally with a
hosting company, as opposed to on your on servers which you manage?
I have had some recommendations from elsewhere but am interested to hear
of people's experiences with external hosts.
My other question concerns the constraints some hosts place on bandwidth
consumption (and the vast costs for exceeding these or requiring more).
Just predicting numbers of podcasts I am planning, for example, I
suspect the 2Gb offered as a maximum by one host will easily be
exceeded.
My task is to persuade those that will make the decision that generous
bandwidth for a site which offers more than textual content is
important! Therefore some testimonies would be useful.
With thanks in advance,
Tehmina
