italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Thank you, Ed, for your kind message (inspired by that of John).
I would like to raise two points.
The first is that I have cautioned against discussing the recent
events at La Sapienza because I have learned over the course of the
years (I founded this list in 1995) that there are certain topics
that seem predestined to arouse the spirit of Aretino in some who
might use the list as a sort of Pasquino. Much as I love Aretino, not
all of us (including myself, I hasten to declare) are as witty,
intelligent and wise as we think we are, and that's why I suggest
from time to time that we avoid certain discussions.
I therefore take this opportunity to make it clear that as long as
people are respectful and scholarly, I am indeed very happy for
discussions to be held on this or any other topic relevant to Italian
studies, understood in the broadest sense of the term. I do retain
the right, however, to consider asking colleagues to change the
subject or their tone should I deem it useful or necessary.
Is that ok, everyone?
Now the second point: what is a 'muppet' (not a 'Muppet' -- I know
Kermit the Frog when I see him)? What would a good Italian equivalent
term be?
Best to all,
George
