***RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS***
The College of Arts and Law at Birmingham comprises a group of departments
with a distinguished and active research culture in which postgraduates play
a central part. The College invites applications for twelve major and a
range of minor scholarships from students wishing to embark on a programme
of postgraduate research (MPhil or PhD) in 2008-9. The major awards will be
worth £16,000 p.a. Minor awards will cover fees and/or a contribution
towards maintenance. Awards are available for study in the following areas:
Drama and Theatre Studies
Modern Languages
English
Music
Historical Studies and related disciplines

UK and EU candidates must also complete the application form for support
from the AHRC or other outside funding body. Overseas candidates must apply
for an Overseas Research Scholarship Award. Candidates ineligible for AHRC
or ORSAS should apply on a separate scholarship form, available on request.
All potential candidates are invited to a College Postgraduate Open Day on
30 January 2008. This will include a presentation and advice on the AHRC

On Wednesday 30 January at 1.00 pm Professor Shearer West, the interim Head
of the College of Arts and Law, will give a talk and guidance on preparing
and submitting applications for Arts and Humanities Research Council
Postgraduate Studentships. Also in attendance will be Dr Richard Clay,
Director of Postgraduate Studies for the School of Historical Studies and Dr
Deborah Parsons, Director of Postgraduate Studies for the School of
Humanities.
Applicants for postgraduate study in the School of Historical Studies and
School of Humanities are strongly advised to attend.
