Dear All
Happy New Year! As some of you may know, the ESRC is engaged in
an "International Benchmarking Review" of UK Economics. As a part of that
review, they are commissioning reviews of sub-disciplines. In this
context, I have been asked to conduct a review of Industrial Organisation
(IO).
The objectives of the report, as given to me, are to produce a briefing
document that provides
(a) an overview of research conducted in IO in the UK over the past 10
years or so (major strengths and weaknesses)
(b) examples of key academic outputs from UK IO in the same period
(c) examples of key non-academic impacts from IO
Essentially, I have until the end of January to produce my report. I am
anxious to consult with as many people as possible and in particular I am
now writing to seek the views of members of the NIE, in whatever capacity,
on the topics listed above. Given the fairly tight timescale, I would
appreciate quick responses.
In particular, you may have views on things that are particularly good, or
bad about UK- based research in IO (are there areas, say, where the UK can
reasonably be said to be at the forefront worldwide of research in the sub-
discipline?); you may have perspectives based upon careers partly in other
countries. From a teaching viewpoint, for example, you may be able to
suggest key UK academic outputs (particular papers or books). Consultants
and policy/ practice users such as those in government agencies may have
particularly useful things to say on the third topic.
I am keen to have your views on the topic by email to

Responses over the next couple of weeks will be particularly helpful.
Yours
Mike Waterson
