i completely agree with Salim that it woudl be seen as a barrier to
require people to register for the HIA gateway: please dont do this!
my email address is on several websites and i really dont get a lot of
spam, maybe the spam filters work well...

Hi,
I think its is something to be mindful of and worth monitoring over
time but from my personal experience of the previous HIA gateway, as
well as other sites, which have had my work details on them is that
the amount of spamming has been low (others may have a different
expereince?). Most organisations display email addresses e.g. ours,
universities, local authorities, consultancies and I don't think
we/they have big spam problems. Personally, the biggest spam occurs in
my google and yahoo personal email accounts and they aren't even
advertised on any websites (probably because they provide the largest
set of users that spammers can spam automatically and randomly).
I would prefer an open approach, which is what the original site had,
as it can get passing visitors interested in HIA and can facilitate
indirect contact and networking through visits to the site as well as
google searches. My experience of registration on other sites is that
it tends to become a (perceived) hurdle/hassle as it is another
password and username to remember and makes using sites feel more time
consuming/complicated particularly when you only vist them/that area
sometimes.
