Do you have to link the databases? Surely you just need to cross search them?
Work on this can be done using GEoXWalk, which is something I heard about whilst studying and (from memory) allows you to search things geographically using different criteria. So if I remember right, for example, you search an area by polygon, the system picks up the Postcodes (or parishes or both) in that area, and uses that information to search eg the archives.
There's probably a lot more to it than that, but it did sound pretty cool kit. I think its produced by EDINA - if you google it I am sure you could find more

At some point in time our council is hoping to link Archives - Local
Studies - Museums - SMR/HER
BIG problems ahead though! 4 separate database systems... where is the
join? Easy for museum artefacts which have locational data. But oh
boy... Local Studies and Archives..
