Subject: What's in a name?
Dear All,
I am interested to learn about the names of your departments, specifically those of you who work in university/college support departments with a mandate for e-learning support.
It has been suggested that our department's current name - Digital Media Projects Office - does not do enough to emphasize a role in e-learning. Some argue it fails to distinguish us from other units who develop digital media solutions to marketing or recruitment challenges, to name just two examples. I tend to agree. Our team comprises instructional designers and technologists and our mandate is to essentially enhance teaching and learning and encourage innovation in that teaching, through the creative application of technology. We work directly with faculty to help them get the most out of our current LMS (Blackboard), other systems (clickers, podcasting etc) and we also create custom solutions - widgets, gizmos, methods etc. Student Engagement is the current buzz phrase here. As an added complication, we also support the growing research community.
The most popular suggestion so far is "Technology Enhanced Learning", but it's not quite doing it for me. I would very much welcome your input. Your department name, names of those you know of, names of those that you really think hit the mark. I know some, and I will continue to crawl the web, but I look forward to hearing from you with suggestions. This is not a name-the-polar-bear-cub competition, but I do almost feel like I should be offering a prize. (Maybe a guided tour of the university next time you're in Toronto. I might even throw in a donut).
Thanks in advance
Matt
