There is an _expired_ IETF draft from 1998 for the uuid: URI scheme
here:

However, more current is RFC 4122:
http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc4122.txt
that specifies urn:uuid:
So, the URN version seems to be the preferred one at this point.
