Dear All,
I am trying to help a student track down a "famous" quotation that her
lecturer has asked her to find. It was apparently made by Clyfford
Still regarding the masculinity of the work of Pollock and the Abstract
Expressionists.
The closest I have been able to find is in the book 'Painting the
difference' by Charles Harrison which has a relevant chapter and says:
After seeing a selection of Pollock's work at the Sidney Janis Gallery,
Clyfford Still wrote to congratulate him in the following terms "Here a
man has been at work, at the profoundest work a man can do, facing up to
what he is and aspires to."
I'm not sure if this is what we are looking for - I fear it is something
you either know or not, and I'm hoping one of you may know!
Any ideas welcomed,
Best wishes,
Hazel
