NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYNTNUASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY(L.PL. 17.510, KODE 1011) - J.NR. SVT-692Applications are invited for a tenured position at the rank of Associate Professor in the Department of Social Anthropology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, within the Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology Management.The Department of Social Anthropology at NTNU was established in 1975. The Department offers a full range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, and teaches courses in classical issues in anthropology, as well as a number of specialized courses of current concern, such as organizational anthropology, globalization and development, postcolonialism, and visual anthropology. The Department also hosts an interdisciplinary African Studies Program. The Department has more than 350 undergraduate students, including 100 in African Studies, and more than 75 postgraduate students.There are currently 12 tenured faculty members, and a number of research fellows. Besides being dedicated to their teaching responsibilities, members of faculty regularly conduct field work and have long-standing research projects of their own. Members of faculty also engage in interdisciplinary and collaborative research with researchers at NTNU and SINTEF as well as in the host countries. Examples of ongoing research are: Peasant economy of the northern highlands of Ethiopia, with a particular focus on poverty and potential for development within the local economy; international labor relations in Latin America, and; the constitutive role of the idea of the “primitive” in some key texts of some European philosophers. Research covers most ethnographic regions. However, considering the extent of research and teaching dedicated to Africa at the Department, this continent is given particular attention.The Department also hosts national and international conferences and seminars on important issues in anthropology, recent themes being: Interdisciplinary Ethiopian studies; place, recollection, dream, nostalgia and performance, and; the relationship between sound and image in ethnographic films.The person appointed will as part of his or her duties undertake teaching in accordance with the relevant university regulations, and will be required to take part in work devoted to examinations and grading without extra remuneration. He or she will have the right and the duty to engage in research within his or her academic field, and will also be obliged to undertake administrative duties.The total workload involved will be divided between research, teaching and administration. The way in which the workload is divided between these three areas may vary from time to time, but as a common practice the department allots equal time to teaching and research.Both academic and pedagogical qualifications will be taken into account in making the appointment.Members of faculty who are employed without having a formal pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching and are unable to document equivalent qualifications, are required to successfully complete a course in academic teaching within two years of taking the appointment. It will be required of the person appointed that he or she shall arrange his or her place of permanent residence such that no problems arise concerning his or her presence at or accessibility to the University.Currently, the salary level for Associate Professors is pr. month from NOK34,675.00 to NOK 48,583.00 (after 16 years of service). A compulsory 2% deduction from salary is paid into the State pension scheme.
