NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYNTNUASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY(L.PL. 17.510, KODE 1011) - J.NR. SVT-692Applications are invited for a tenured position at the rank of Associate Professor in the Department of Social Anthropology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, within the Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology Management. The Department of Social Anthropology at NTNU was established in 1975. The Department offers a full range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, and teaches courses in classical issues in anthropology, as well as a number of specialized courses of current concern, such as organizational anthropology, globalization and development, postcolonialism, and visual anthropology. The Department also hosts an interdisciplinary African Studies Program. The Department has more than 350 undergraduate students, including 100 in African Studies, and more than 75 postgraduate students. There are currently 12 tenured faculty members, and a number of research fellows. Besides being dedicated to their teaching responsibilities, members of faculty regularly conduct field work and have long-standing research projects of their own. Members of faculty also engage in interdisciplinary and collaborative research with researchers at NTNU and SINTEF as well as in the host countries. Examples of ongoing research are: Peasant economy of the northern highlands of Ethiopia, with a particular focus on poverty and potential for development within the local economy; international labor relations in Latin America, and; the constitutive role of the idea of the “primitive” in some key texts of some European philosophers. Research covers most ethnographic regions. However, considering the extent of research and teaching dedicated to Africa at the Department, this continent is given particular attention. The Department also hosts national and international conferences and seminars on important issues in anthropology, recent themes being: Interdisciplinary Ethiopian studies; place, recollection, dream, nostalgia and performance, and; the relationship between sound and image in ethnographic films. The person appointed will as part of his or her duties undertake teaching in accordance with the relevant university regulations, and will be required to take part in work devoted to examinations and grading without extra remuneration. He or she will have the right and the duty to engage in research within his or her academic field, and will also be obliged to undertake administrative duties. The total workload involved will be divided between research, teaching and administration. The way in which the workload is divided between these three areas may vary from time to time, but as a common practice the department allots equal time to teaching and research. Both academic and pedagogical qualifications will be taken into account in making the appointment.Members of faculty who are employed without having a formal pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching and are unable to document equivalent qualifications, are required to successfully complete a course in academic teaching within two years of taking the appointment. The University offers such courses. The applicants that have been short-listed will be invited for interviews and a demonstration of their pedagogical ability, usually in the form of a lecture. The employee must within three years show knowledge of Norwegian, or another Scandinavian language corresponding to level three in the course for non-native speakers held at the Department of Applied Linguistics.A more detailed specification of the subject area, the duties of the post, and other considerations that will be taken into account in deciding upon the appointment can be obtained by contacting Head of Department, Jan Ketil Simonsen, telephone: +47 73 55 03 65, cell: +47 947 84 464, e-1; post: [log in to unmask], or Deputy Head of Department Bjørn Erring, telephone: +47 73 59 65 50, e-mail: [log in to unmask] accordance with our personnel policy, the work force should reflect the population in general with reference to sex and cultural diversity. Women and those of minority background are therefore especially invited to apply. The appointment will be made subject to the current conditions regulating the appointment of Civil Servants in Norway. It will be required of the person appointed that he or she shall arrange his or her place of permanent residence such that no problems arise concerning his or her presence at or accessibility to the University.Currently, the salary level for Associate Professors is pr. month from NOK34,675.00 to NOK 48,583.00 (after 16 years of service). A compulsory 2% deduction from salary is paid into the State pension scheme. Promotion to full Professorship can take place on the basis of an assessment of qualifications.Applications must contain information concerning education, examination results, and previous experience. Attested copies of degree certificates and testimonials must be attached. Applicants must also submit:5 copies of their application5 attested copies of degree certificates and testimonials3 copies of published and unpublished work which the applicant wishes to be have taken into consideration (no more than 10 publications inclusive PhD thesis).3 copies of a brief description of the publications the applicant consider as his or her most significant scientific contribution, and which the applicant specifically want to be reviewed for the position.3 copies of a list of all publications with bibliographical references.Joint and collective work may be considered, but if the applicant's own contribution to such work is difficult to identify then he or she must attach a brief summary of his or her contribution. Each application should also include a list of the scholarly material submitted for consideration.Applications should be sent to the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology Management, Dragvoll, N-7491 Trondheim, Norway.Applications should quote code number J.nr. SVT-692 for reference purposes.Closing date for receipt of applications is 1. February 2008.Notes for applicants from outside Norway:1. An applicant's scholarly production cannot be taken into account unless copies of relevant work are sent for evaluation. These should be sent unsolicited as candidates will not be asked to send such material. When there are major difficulties in sending multiple copies, candidates may ask for permission to send only one copy of particular items, but as this slows down the work of the specialist committee such a request should be made only in extreme circumstances. It is usual in Norway for copies of doctoral theses - when relevant - to be submitted for assessment along with other scholarly material. Please note that an applicant can not submit more than 10 publications.2. As soon as possible after the deadline an expert committee will be appointed to assess submitted scholarly material and to make recommendations concerning the applicants. Applicants from outside Norway should be aware that the process of appointment may take longer than is the case outside Scandinavia, especially if there are many applicants.2
