As an exercise at the recent Masterclass in
Performative Social Science at Bournemouth,
participants were offered a short piece of interview
text (“Carl and the little sandwiches” Story) to
develop performances through collaborations over the
two days. Several interesting and creative
presentations resulted from these endeavours.
Inspired by participants’ efforts, I felt as though I
wanted to express my own take on Carl’s story —a tale
that has dogged me for several years now. I also feel
that it is my obligation to tell the interviewee’s
story to the best of my ability, honouring our
collaboration. Because Carl was raised to believe that
caring means love, I wanted to present Carl’s story as
a love story. The resulting A/V is my interpretive
imagining of his story.

[By the way, Carl is the son of Polly who tells her
story in another of my A/V presentations, “I can
remember the night”:

I used a condensed version of the text (attached) and
programmes generally available on PCs as well as
materials easily accessible on the net. I realised
after making it that it is the second time that I have
used a kind of “tell/show” format in my A/V
productions. Perhaps this works best for me in both
expressing the text as well as interpreting it—both
done in order to fully engage the audience with the
story, my ultimate goal.
Anyone who catches the reference to Renaissance
religious iconography in the visual representation
gets a special star on top of their tree this year!
Cheers,
