Research Bursary in Adventure Sports and/or Outdoor Leisure
Education
The School of Sport, Leisure & Travel, Buckinghamshire New
University, High Wycombe, UK is offering a full-time 3 year
fee –free PhD bursary of £7,500 pa for research into
Adventure Sport in Nature and/or Outdoor Leisure/Education .
The School has a strong research profile in outdoor
adventure education, particularly from social and cultural
perspectives. This research area has links with European
and international groups and a post doctoral research fellow
will shortly be appointed. It has recently developed a
part-time MA in professional development (outdoor learning).
This bursary appointment would focus upon socio-cultural
study of Nature -based Sport or Adventure
Recreation/Education. The research would place emphasis on
aspects such as images of ‘masculinities’ and/or
‘femininities’ in ‘life-style’ sports and/or
narratives of
sport in nature. The research would be expected to draw
largely from interpretative and qualitative methodologies.

You should have a first or 2:1 in an appropriate first
degree and /or an appropriate masters degree. The research
proposal will give the panel an idea of your particular
interests and experience. The final decision regarding the
focus of the research bursary would be made between the
supervisors and the appointed candidate.
