CRANFIELD UNIVERSITY AT THE DEFENCE ACADEMY OF THE UK
Fully Funded PhD Studentship (CASE award) : Quantitative Modelling of
Military Tactical Decision-Making (up to £17, 000 per annum)
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship, fully funded by EPSRC and
Dstl (Defence Science and Technical Laboratory, part of the MOD) for 3.5
years. This is available within the Engineering Systems Department of
Cranfield University at the Defence College of Management and Technology
(part of the UK Defence Academy) at Shrivenham on the Oxfordshire/Wiltshire
border. The award covers fees at the UK/EU rate plus a maintenance stipend
of up to £17,000 per annum (normally tax free) for UK nationals or those
who have been ‘ordinarily resident’ in the UK for the last three years. For
EU nationals, this can include time spent in full-time education or
employment in the UK. Those ‘ordinarily resident’ in other European Union
countries for the last three years are eligible for the fees but not for
the maintenance award.
The project is concerned with quantitative modelling of military tactical
decision-making. It will involve some experimental work and statistical
model-building but there is scope for the direction to be influenced by the
particular interests of the successful applicant, e.g. to explore modelling
approaches associated with computational intelligence such as decision
trees, Bayesian networks, decision networks, etc. The results will help
military simulations to better represent human behaviour and so achieve
greater realism. The successful applicant will be expected to spend at
least three months working on the project at Dstl and the additional costs
involved in doing so will be reimbursed.
Applicants should have a good first degree or an MSc in statistics,
operational research, applied mathematics, computer science or a related
discipline. For more information or an informal discussion, please contact
Ken McNaught
([log in to unmask]). To apply for this position, please send a
CV together with a covering letter by e-mail or post to Ken McNaught,
Engineering Systems Dept, Cranfield University, DCMT, Defence Academy,
Shrivenham, Swindon SN6 8LA. Applications should be received by 18 January,
2008.
