Hi Chloe,
Regarding the consultant already working in the NHS, he would
presumably already have been screened by the relevant Trust regarding
BBVs and therefore he should be able to present evidence of his status
to the private hospital. I would expect a Hep B titre level on a UK
accredited lab report to IVS standard as a minimum. HBsAg would also be
required if he is undertaking EPP work to comply with best practice. As
he is not new to the NHS, Hep C and HIV testing is not mandatory,
although if he is new to EPP work this would be. You haven't indicated
this in your query. If his titre level is <100iu/l, HBsAg and core
antibody results would be requested.
For a clinician coming from another Trust, it really depends which area
they will be working in. If EPP, it would be the same as above, although
I would offer Hep C and HIV screening and explain to the individual that
in the next couple of years this testing will probably be mandatory. As
mandatory Hep C testing was introduced for EPP workers several years ago
they may already have evidence of freedom from infection.
I ask for a copy of the microbiology result form on a UK accredited lab
report which is IVS.
I hope this helps you.
Happy Friday!
Kind regards,
Rita

Dear list
could I have a concensus of opinion as to what pre employment screening
any of you do/would do for a consultant doctor currently working the NHS
coming to do some private work in a private hospital...the work
involves EPP? The work in the private hospital is on a self-employed
basis.
Also, for those of you working in the NHS, if a doctor/nurse comes to
you from another trust, so is therefore NOT a new healthcare worker, but
an existing one:
1.. what pre emp screening for BBV's do you do?
2.. what proof of BBV status do you ask for (ie IVS on path form
from recognised lab, and how long ago it <5 years)?
look forward to hearing from some of you and thanks to those who helped
me out with the workplace regs this morning!
Chloe
