Dear Colleagues,
I am in need of a SHG T30 Type II crystal for my Continuum 8010 ND:YAG
laser. This laser is 12 years old and I was recently informed by Continuum
that they no longer support nor offer replacement parts for lasers that
predate the year 2000. Continuum has offered no solutions and maintains
that they currently use a "bayonet" type mount for the SHG crystals, which,
of course, is incompatible with our older laser system. They have also
stated that the new SHG crystals and windows are slightly larger than their
older counterparts. The service technician in charge of
inspecting/replacing the crystals maintains that while he might be able to
"squeeze" the new SHG crystal and windows into our older style mount, he
cannot guarantee nor offer us a warrantee. He was also adamant that in the
event of damaging our old crystal or the mount itself, he has absolutely
nothing to replace it with. The bad news continues... I was further
informed that they have updated all their old files, spec sheets, drawings,
electrical diagrams, etc. and have DELETED all pertinent information
regarding older laser systems predating ~2000. Thus, the technician holds
firm that he would have no idea how to fix any busted electrical components
on our old mount or assist us in finding the correct size SHG crystal simply
because of a corporate data "clean-up". In short, this is ridiculous!!! I
have been passed around from person to person at Continuum, have tried
rational conversation, a few blunt tirades, all to no avail! I have even
resorted to flattery, informing Continuum that it is a testament to their
products and expertise that their laser systems have long lifetimes, and
could function for even longer especially when paired with continuing
support and replacement parts. Again, nothing! According to Continuum's
mantra, why replace an old SHG crystal, when you can buy a completely new
laser system (which we all know will be obsolete to them the following
year). As a graduate student rapidly nearing graduation, I am desperate for
any advice on how to proceed. I know it is a long shot, but if anyone
happens to have a spare, undamaged SHG crystal (Type II, T30), Christmas
would come early to our lab! Or, if anyone happens to know anyone at
Continuum that might shoot straight with me, that would be greatly
appreciated, as well. Thank you for listening.

Sincerely,
Lee-Ann Smith-Freeman
