A postdoctoral position in Physical Chemistry is available at the
Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, Germany. Within the framework of the
cluster of excellence 'The Future Ocean' (www.future-ocean.de) a new junior
research group (Jun.-Prof. Gernot Friedrichs) was recently established
specializing on the chemistry at the ocean surface. New experiments based on
modern laser spectroscopic techniques are currently set up (cw cavity
ringdown spectroscopy, frequency modulation spectroscopy, and sum frequency
generation spectroscopy) aiming to investigate the kinetics of surface
mediated reactions, e.g. ozone deposition on halide containing water. The
main focus of the research project
Investigation of Water Surface Reactions using Sum Frequency Generation
(SFG) Spectroscopy
lies on the identification and the detailed study of surface reactions with
relevance for environmental modeling. The candidate will carry out and
interpret SFG experiments on model substrates and reactions. The work
includes the operation of a ps laser system and the design and set up of a
reaction chamber for reactive uptake studies. Model systems will be selected
in close collaboration with marine scientists thus offering the opportunity
for multidisciplinary research within the excellence cluster.
The successful candidate should hold a PhD in Physical Chemistry, Physics,
or a related field and should have a good background in one or more of the
following areas: non-linear laser spectroscopy (preferably SFG), reaction
kinetics/dynamics, aerosol/marine/heterogeneous chemistry. The position will
be awarded for one year, renewable thereafter upon mutual agreement. A start
date of April 2008 is anticipated, although it is negotiable. Salary will be
according to the appropriate civil service level (13 TV-L). The University
of Kiel is an equal opportunity employer and encourages female scientists
and scientists with disabilities to apply.
Please send or e-mail your complete application documents (cover letter with
short statement of research interest, CV, list of publications, and names
and contact information of at least two referees) before January 15, 2008, to
