Dear List,
Many thanks to list members who responded to my enquiry regarding hard rock mining in Newfoundland - very helpful.
My interest has come out of my research into North Devon Pottery, and other artefacts, discovered in Newfoundland http://www.heritage.nf.ca/avalon/artifacts/misc3.html (and next page) which were shipped from North Devon ports (mainly Bideford and Barnstaple) from 17th to 18th century. The ships then loaded with salt cod for the return trip via South America and the Caribbean.
The possible connection with hard rock mining is suggested by the surnames of persons associated with mining in Cornwall and Devon who travelled to Newfoundland, and ships manifests which suggest the transportation of mining equipment.
