Dear Eliszabeth - and listmembers
In Danish the word midwife is 'jordemoder' which is a very old word.
Nowadays it'd linguistically be jordmor. The word jordemoder means 'Earth
mother'.
Best wishes

Dear List Members
I'm aware this has been touched on before in the course of other
discussions, but I'd be grateful to hear from speakers of non-English
languages what is the more literal or precise meaning of the word used to
mean 'midwife'? (for example, 'sage-femme' in French means 'wise woman').
