Breaking Into Song
2pm Friday 25 January to 6pm Saturday 26 January, 2008 Pembroke College,
Cambridge
Part of the Medieval Song Project based at the Institute of Musical
Research in London, this two-day symposium aims to explore new
approaches to writing the history of medieval song by focusing on the
way in which its various traditions were shaped and mediated by music.
It will bring together scholars working on medieval song with a view to
establishing dialogue between those addressing similar problems within
different repertories.
Each contributor to the symposium has been invited to present an
analysis of an individual song, placing particular emphasis on
musico-stylistic features. The symposium's intra-disciplinary focus will
promote exchange between those working in areas that have become
specialist domains, as well as encouraging reflection on the extent to
which musical readings might engage with critical approaches developed
in other disciplines. The whole spectrum of medieval song repertories
will be open to consideration (Latin, vernacular, monophonic,
polyphonic), with emphasis placed on songs with versified texts
primarily destined for use outside the regular liturgical cursus. At the
end of the conference, a response to the musicological work will be
presented by literary scholar, Dr Nicolette Zeeman.
Convenors: Dr Sam Barrett (Cambridge), Dr Helen Deeming (Southampton),
Dr Elizabeth Eva Leach (Royal Holloway)
