actually, his line was "Why should I do anything for POSTERITY? What has posterity ever done for me?"
It was nice to see you in Oxford. Could I ask you to please send me the dutch romanization system link. and also any other manuscript catalog links that you know of? if you have a template that you use for manuscript cataloging, I would be interested to receive a copy of that as well.
Here's the link to the TIMA cataloging wiki. I would be grateful for any suggestions, additions, corrections, etc.

Subject: Re: Encyclopaeida of Islam Three
Dear Andreas,
Leiden University tries to hold on to the online version of EI3 in
combination with the printed version - as long as our money lasts.
The problem you mention is not limited to Brill only: if you discontinue
a subscription to an online resource from any publisher you end up with
nothing. Here at Leiden there is a never-ending discussion about hanging
on to print, but when we really have to make a choice we often opt for
the online version, because they are so much easier to search and
consult. Our readers have become so much accustomed to accessing
journals and bibliographies online that many of them have lost the knack
of finding printed volumes on the shelf.
There is one other thing: although curators and subject specialists
generally worry about the future of our collections, managers usually
point out that they have to spend their budget to satisfy the actual
needs of our users rather than those of future generations. I suppose
you remember Groucho Marx, who once said: 'Why should I do anything for
the future? What has the future ever done for me?'
With best regards,

Hello to the list from Bamberg
we are debating here in our library on how to deal with the
EI3/Encyclopedia of Islam Online or however you want to call this
obscure product. Obscure not content wise but selling wise. It is still
unclear to me and my colleagues here in the library on how to deal with
what Brill is offering. There is a consortium of German libraries
negotiating with Brill and for now most of the libraries opted for the
license version meaning the very hefty yearly fee which in the end
would give you no content at all (current status of the negotiations).
The other option is to buy the rights for the contents of the database
for an exorbitant fee and then pay another yearly fee for hosting.
What is the general opinion of colleagues in libraries? How do
individual libraries proceed? Do individial libraries already know how
the rights on the contents look? Is there a yearly CD-ROM giving you the
contents bought so far? What will be the case with the printed edition
of the EI3/Encyclopedia of Islam Online? Will it be published in print
without an index? Will the articles be published in the chronological
order they come in (which was communicated to participants of Melcom
Int. in Sarajevo by the Brill representative) or will they be published
in alphabetical order?
I am trying to collect opinions and facts so we can conclude our process
of opinion building here in Bamberg. It was my assumption that buying
the content would be wiser but I would like to hear what others are
doing or planning to do.
Best wishes from rainy, grey and cold Bamberg
Andreas Drechsler
