Please find details of the 'Conservation for Dummies' and 'What's Eating Your Collection: Pest Identification and Prevention' being delivered on behalf of MLA London in the new year below as part of series of training courses dealing with collections care. These courses have proved very popular and there are only a few places remaining. They are ideal for any organisations with objects in their collections.
To ensure that the archives and libraries sector can take advantage of these courses we are reserving a number of places especially for them until Monday 17th December 2007.
If you would like to attend any of these courses we strongly advise you to book by the 17th December as we cannot guarantee availability after this date.

Conservation for Dummies: a crash course in basic conservation for objects

Ever wondered how to make your objects more presentable?
Don't know if that damage was there before it went on loan?
Would you like to able to assess the objects in your collection?
Want to be more confident about writing condition reports?
If so, this course is for you. This course will give you the confidence to assess objects and write condition reports. You will gain experience in various cleaning techniques and learn when you should use them.
The course will also help delegates to learn about the process of commissioning conservators for their collections and a bound booklet on the subject on the day.
What's Eating Your Collection: Pest Identification and Prevention

Are your windowsills littered with unidentified corpses?
This course aims to provide you with the knowledge to identify the main collections insect pest species, how to find insects in your collections, and how to set up a monitoring programme.
This one-day training course aims to introduce anyone working with collections to the basics of pest identification and pest prevention. Delivered by David Pinnigar, author of "Pest Management in Museums, Archives and Historic Houses" who has worked around the world advising, and running training on, pest management. The day will cover:
· An introduction to the main pest insects which damage collections
· What they need to live
· How to identify them
· The damage they cause
· Ways to prevent them becoming established.
· Ways to control them if they do cause problems
· Understanding pest environments
· How to carry out a practical survey.
· Making plans to establish and embed IPM in your museum, library, or archive.
Stop the Rot! How and why collections decay, and how it can prevented

You will also be offered a range of practical strategies to help ensure that your collections will be accessible now and in the future with a range of practical preventative strategies to look after your collection. Delegates will also receive a bound booklet on the subject on the day of the event.
