Dear Emma,
Beware the slow response of most LCD projectors (both the low refresh
rate (typically 50-60Hz) and the rise/decay responses of the
individual LCD elements), although these characteristics may be
entirely acceptable for many experiments, such as examining gaze
paths over static images.
DLP (digital light processing) projectors can give better performance
than LCD based ones. We use the InFocus DepthQ 3D Video Projector
from <http://www.depthq.com>. It runs at up to 120 Hz, fast enough
to allow stereoscopic display if relevant, although it can also
impose a constant single frame delay in some cases. It runs natively
only at 800 x 600 pixels, although does a decent job of downscaling
1024 x 768 images. I have a brochure about if you're interested (not
sure that attaching it to this list message is feasible).
Perhaps the biggest issue for projectors (like LCD screens) is that
they have a native resolution and don't display stimuli very well at
lesser resolutions . A good CRT will happily display stimuli at 1024
x 768, and then switch to full-screen PAL digital video at 720 x 576
without problems. For best results with a projector, however, one
often needs to letterbox or pillarbox stimuli to fit within the
native resolution.
Regards,
Michael
