Next semester I will be teaching a module called Geographies of Social Life
here at the National University of Singapore. I want to develop a new set of
readings for the discussion groups linked to a new group project.
The group project (5 students per group) consists of students constructing
maps of the social geographies of Singapore. Through the process of mapping
I want students to grasp and debate the issues of power processes and
challenges related to mapping and cartography.
I've got references from Massey's chapter (1995) Imagining the world in
Allen and Massey Shape of the World.
I also know of J. B. Harley's work in two chapters - 1 in Maps, Knowledge
and Power in Cosgrove and Daniels (1988) and 2 Deconstructing the map in
Barnes and Duncan's Writing Worlds (1992).
What I need though are more up to date references which explore similar
themes of power, authorship, representation etc. Putting in 'maps',
'mapping' 'cartographies' into web of science provides far too many
references to handle and majority are irrelevant.
So I'm seeking any references that members of the list may know of or have
written themselves.
Any references very welcome - reply to me personally and I will happily
compile the full list and post it out to the mailbase.
Very many thanks
Tracey Skelton
