2007 Distinguished Lecture in Anthropology
American Museum of Natural History
December 19, 2:00pm, Linder Theater
DISTINGUISHED ANTHROPOLOGIST: Dr. Richard A. Gould, Archaeologist and
Professor of Anthropology, Brown University
TITLE: "Picking up the Pieces: Archaeology Confronts Mass-fatality
Disasters."
ABSTRACT: It's hard to imagine that archaeology would become critical to
the recovery and identification of victims of modern, mass-fatality
disasters. Starting with trial excavations at the World Trade Center in
New York, followed by "the Station" Nightclub Fire of 2003, and then by
Hurricane "Katrina" and other recent events, we have learned how important
archaeology can be in assisting families and others affected by such
disasters in finding closure and in providing evidence for medical and
legal proceedings afterwards. The progression from the WTC to "the
Station" is especially revealing in how it points the way toward a new
kind of "disaster archaeology."
Richard A. Gould received his Ph.D. in Anthropology at UC-Berkeley in
1965. He worked until 1971 as Assistant Curator of North American
Archaeology at the American Museum of Natural History, and later taught as
Professor of Anthropology at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, (1971-81)
and Brown University (1981-present). He has written or edited 12 books
and monographs, the latest being DISASTER ARCHAEOLOGY (Utah, 2007), as
well as numerous papers based on his research in ethnoarchaeology,
underwater archaeology, and, most recently, in forensic science.
