The only way at present (assuming that you mean some kind of standard
system compression, e.g. gzip, bzip, compress, zip), would be to have a
shell script which uncompresses the images on the fly.
Of course, if you had images that were compressed according to the PCK
format (or similar), or used one of the img-CIF compression methods, it
would be done automatically by Mosflm.
