Archives for London invites you to the next in its series of seminars,
to be held on 10 January in Room South Range 1, Kings College London, The
Strand.
Lost and Found:
Security in our Archives – it’s everyone’s problem
The security of the records we look after or use for research affects us
all. Archive practitioners need to raise levels of awareness by ensuring
systems are in place to avoid document theft and that items are replaced
correctly after access. Prices for documents, and more importantly
ephemera, are rising in the salerooms and we need to be aware of what is
valuable and what is not. This seminar aims to explain why public access
to records is sometimes restricted and how users and practitioners can
work together to prevent loss.
Raising this issue is timely - the November 2007 Public Services Quality
Group Forum focused on security issues and it has now formed a Security
and Access Group. The British Library map thefts led to the recent
conviction of one individual. Expect to hear more about this subject in
2008 - attend this seminar and find out more!
Archives for London is delighted to welcome Norman James, Principal of the
National Archives’ Archives Advisory Service, to tell us more about
security arrangements for Archives, and in particular the European
Archives Group Working Party on Security. He will be joined by Vernon
Rapley, head of the Art and Antiques Unit, Specialist and Economic Crime
Directorate, New Scotland Yard to talk about security among our
collections.
You will find this seminar useful if:
- you are a user wanting to know why archive access controls are a
necessary evil;
- you want to discover more about what to do to avoid and prevent thefts
as a practitioner;
- you would like to know more about how this issue is being tackled across
Europe.
Doors will open at 6pm and the talk will start at 6.30pm. The seminar is
an open forum and following the talk attendees are welcome to ask
questions, exchange news, and discuss matters of interest. We regret that
refreshments cannot be provided at this month’s venue.
