Context
The British Red Cross is part of the largest voluntary humanitarian
organisation in the world. It promotes humanitarian values, and provides
emergency help to people in short-term crisis in the UK and overseas.
Within the UK, the British Red Cross operates through 35,000 volunteers
and 2,800 staff.
The Information Resources department centrally manages the British Red
Cross’ modern and historical information assets. The team provides the
skills, knowledge and expertise to help staff and volunteers do their
job well, by supplying relevant, accurate information and guidance. It
also supports the public image of the British Red Cross by responding to
between 500-800 public enquiries every month. Through these two
functions and across the different professional disciplines, the team
provides a wide variety of resources and services including knowledge
and records management, museum, archive, library and audio-visual
library collections and public information.
Scope
Reporting to the Head of Information Resources, the Records Manager
will take forward our electronic records management programme,
communicate core guidance on records management issues and take a key
role in future knowledge and records management initiatives. They will
also manage secure long term on and off-site storage facilities for
semi-current records for UK office staff, and develop this service in
our territories.
Overall Purpose of the Post
To lead on the development of best practice and guidance on electronic
records management, including taking overall responsibility for the
Communications division shared drive and wider S:drive reorganisation
project. To be responsible for identifying defunct, semi-current,
archival and vital records in conjunction with document owners and the
archivist. To provide and manage an on and off-site storage facility for
UK office staff and to develop this service in our territories. To
manage and develop the records management database. To work closely and
proactively with the archivist to ensure the smooth and timely flow of
information from semi-current repositories into the archive. To
periodically review and maintain existing record retention guidelines.
To identify and develop future records management solutions within a
broader knowledge management context. You will be expected to develop a
thorough knowledge of the organisation and history of the Red Cross and
Red Crescent Movement. You will also take a place on the rota for
responding to public enquiries.
