Hello,
The following article is the eleventh in a series that analyzes the
UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at the intersection of culture
with economics, ecology, and technology.
It is argued that the sustainable development targets of the MDGs are
contingent on cultural adaptations at all levels - global, national,
regional, local. It is also argued that the most fundamental of these
adaptations is to replace patriarchy by gender equity. Based on her
writings, I think Rachel Carson would agree.
It is hard to envision how the MDGs will be achieved unless supported by
social and cultural adaptations, gender equality in particular. On the
other hand, it is possible that MDG-related activities may serve as a
catalyst that will get the social and cultural adaptations started.
