Illinois Harvest: digitised books

The Illinois Harvest is a project of the University of University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It is working in collaboration with the
Open Content Alliance to provide free access to a large collection of
online materials taken from the holdings of its libraries. These cover
all subject areas including reference works, materials on American
history and politics and local Illinois history and culture. This
section of the website provides free access to the full text of 100s of
out of copyright books mainly published during the 18th and 19th
Centuries. They are sub-divided into thematic collections which include:
history and culture, social welfare and reform. Technical and copyright
details are displayed on the website.

The findNZarticles enables is a free database maintained by the National
Library of New Zealand, Christchurch City Libraries, Dunedin Public
Libraries, Landcare Research NZ. It enables users to search a number of
New Zealand libraries' and institutions' indexes to New Zealand
newspapers and journals. There are 3 main subsections: culture (arts,
humanities and social sciences) newspapers and science and technology.
The culture section cross searches Index New Zealand, University of
Waikato : an index to Te Ao Hou : the new world, published 1952-1974.
Abstracts of content are provided for many of the articles.

ViewFinder: image resources for England's history

The ViewFinder site is maintained by National Monuments Record - the
public archive of English Heritage . It provides free access to a
searchable database of over 25,000 online photographs of English
historic buildings and monuments. They include images of key government
buildings, royal palaces, monuments and examples of historic
architecture. The database may be searched or browsed by theme. Topics
covered include: transport, royalty, military bases; and historic
photographs of damage from WW1 and WW2. Copyright and technical
information is displayed on the website.

free of charge. Key topics include the Boer war, free trade and tariff

the British armed services. Its website provides information on its

Word on the Street: Popular Street Literature from 1650-1910

This site provides access to the full-text of over 1,800 Scottish
broadsheets published between 1650-1910. Broadsheets were the popular
press / newspapers read by working class people of the time and provide
a fascinating insight into contemporary social and political history.
They also contain contemporary satirical cartoons, caricatures and
songs.The site site forms part of the digital library collections of the
National Library of Scotland. Highlights for social scientists include
materials relating to Scottish emigration, accounts of crime and riots
and materials covering contemporary politics including relations between
Scotland and England. The database may be searched or browsed. The site
also includes a background history of the broadsheets and suggestions
for further reading.
