RESEARCH FELLOW POST
UNIVERSITY OF STRATHCLYDE
£23,002- £27,466
At home Abroad: The life experiences of children of
Eastern European migrant workers in Scotland
The Department of Educational and Professional Studies
at the University of Strathclyde is inviting
applications for a 21-months full-time Research Fellow
to work on the above project. This is an excellent
opportunity to work on a project funded by the highly
prestigious Economic and Social Research Council
(ESRC). The Department has a thriving teaching and
research culture and the appointed person will have
opportunities to engage with other researchers doing
work with children and young people.
The research project
The project aims to explore the life experiences of
children from Eastern European countries recently
settled in Scotland as a result of their parents'
migration for work purposes. We will use the theories
of social capital and social networks to inform the
study. We plan to explore children's experiences by
using participatory research methods, including visual
methods, with children aged 6-14 years old of new
Eastern European migrants. The study adopts a
qualitative design, to include focus groups with
children, case studies of young migrants and their
families and interviews with adults. We will produce
detailed accounts on children's own views and
experiences of what is like to be a migrant child in
Scotland. The findings are likely to generate interest
from a wide range of organisations, including policy
makers, national and local service providers,
practitioners working new migrants and their families.
The post
We are looking for an enthusiastic researcher who is
committed to high standards of academic work, as
required by ESRC-funded research. It is important that
the Research Fellow has a Masters/Ph.D. in a Social
Science subject and/or equivalent research experience.
Some experience of working with children/young people
is also essential. We also expect the researcher to
have an interest in migration research. Experience of
reviewing academic research, writing for publication
and presenting research findings to a wide range of
audiences is also desirable. The post will be subject
to an Enhanced Disclosure Scotland check.
This full-time post is available from 1 January 2008
or as soon as possible thereafter and is funded for 21
months. Salary scale: £23,002 - £27,466. It is
anticipated that interviews will be held at the
University of Strathclyde on the 28th November 2007.
The project will be managed by Dr. Daniela Sime, who
can be contacted for informal enquiries about the
project or the post at [log in to unmask]
