Visit to Russia - February 2008
Since1987, Dr Alan Wood, former Senior Lecturer in Russian History in the
History Department at Lancaster, has organized a trip to Russia. A further
visit is planned for the week 1-8 March 2008.
The arrangements for the visit will follow the pattern of previous years,
which includes three days in Moscow visiting sites of historical and
cultural interest such as the Kremlin and Red Square, Lenin's mausoleum, the
Novodevichii Convent, museums, cathedrals and a meeting with staff and
students at Moscow University. An overnight train journey then takes the
group to St Petersburg, where the three-day programme includes the famous
Hermitage Museum and Art Gallery (the Tsars' Winter Palace), the SS Peter
and Paul fortress and dungeons, the Yusupov Palace (where Rasputin was
murdered), sites connected with the Russian Revolution of 1917, and an
evening of traditional folk-singing and dancing. There are usually other
options available, including visits to the opera or ballet.
The cost of next year's visit is £975, which is much better value than other
similar trips through commercial operators. The price includes full
international airfare, internal travel, half-board accommodation at a good
tourist-class hotel, full services of a professional English-speaking guide
and all entrance fees. Optional visits are at extra cost. You will also be
required to have your own personal travel insurance, and your UK passport
for visa application purposes must be valid for up to six months after date
of departure from the Russian Federation.
Any members of the University - students and staff - are welcome to take
part; also if you have any family or friends you think may be interested,
please pass on this information.
For further details please contact Alan Wood by phone or email immediately.
There is some urgency about securing flight and hotel reservations.
