There was a Discovery Channel Documentary not so long ago about superior weapons of war throughout history.
The actual Enfield rifle was mentioned but so was the German Tripod mounted machine gun (name?)
It was explained that it was not so much the mechanics as the method of use that made them effective.
The enemy positioned them in a triangular fashion (avoiding cross-fire) to obtain maximum density of targets.
The stratgey being that if a bullet goes head on and misses it will be useless while a bullet that is fired across
approaching men it will hit the person immediately next to them.
I found it quite disturbing to hear methods of mass murder portrayed in an almost dispassionate and admiring fashion.
