Hi Lorraine,
I recommend you save to Outlook message format (.msg) format. These can be
opened (eg when double-clicking the file) in Outlook and show the mail as it
was, including attachments.
You need to have Outlook to subsequently view the saved files (or use a
viewer that can view Outlook files) so longer term this could prove a
problem. Who knows if we will still be using Outlook x years from now ?
Probably a safe bet that you will still be able to read them.
An alternative is to save into a different format, eg PDF or XML which may
be more 'standard' though not necessarily a 'true' copy as some conversion
is required. Again, though, this approach should be acceptable.

Subject: Saving Emails
Dear all,
I have a query in relation to which file type should be recommended when
saving emails in order to save the message and the attachment together (if
you are using Microsoft Outlook). One suggestion
said that Outlook Template should be used, however, when I did this and
went to open it later I got the following message: address of email
test.oft is not a valid Win32 application and the email would not open.
If I save emails as outlook message format type, I am able to open the
email exactly as it was (ie in email format with all the email structure).
Is outlook template or outlook message format recommended? Or something
else?
Many thanks,
Lorraine Buchanan
