Yes, "palpable" makes all the difference, doesn't it,
at least to those who linked greatness with
unobtrusiveness. But, as Mark says, "The finished poem
may indeed appear to have designs of some kind on an
audience." And why not? We are, after all, long since
past the valuation of "showing" over "telling."
And, yes, poetry _should_ be "great," but, like our
mothers, it's more often " good enough."
