Hi,
We recently gave a presentation at the JISC RSC-SE e-learning fair
covering our evaluation of VLE systems and migration from Learnwise
(commercial VLE) to Moodle.
I hope to soon have the powerpoints edited into the video of the the
presentation which I would be happy to share.
Just as a pointer we ran Learnwise for nearly 7 years and had a migration
of of 1259 'sites' (courses/units, called theme what you like), 426 tutors
and 214,000 files!
The key to the successful migration wasn't the moving of all the data
/users etc, but the staff awareness and training followed by student
awareness campaign.
This was preceeded by a year long pilot and a year of research before
that.
The full launch university wide was this year and so far has been a great
success - mostly because tutors find it very easy to use, which outweighs
any shortcomings (not that there are many), and there is in turn a direct
correlation between tutor engagement with the system and student
engagement.
These are worth a read:

Moodle evaluation
We currently run the Blackboard Academic Suite comprising portal, content
management system and VLE -it is heavily used across the university by all
students and we have something like 2000 modules of varying complexity -
are there any large HE UK institutions out there that have migrated from a
commercial VLE (blackboard or WebCT) to moodle, that would be prepared to
discuss the experience with us.
We have no plans to switch from our highly successful system at the moment
but like most institutions we need to evaulate open source alternatives in
terms of usability, feature set, total cost of ownership (value for
money), pedagogical and learner needs.
If you prefer, email me direct, rather than posting to the list
