International Stationary Steam Engine Society - Winter Meetings
Readers of this list might be interested to learn about the current series of ISSES Winter Meetings being held at Quinborne Community Centre, Ridgacre Rd, Quinton, Birmingham, B32 2TW
Thursday evenings:- November 2007 to April 2008 - ALL Welcome
Following on from our recent successful meetings at Quinborne Community Centre, we are pleased to confirm, the topics and dates for most meetings until the end of the season in April, 2008. Normally the meetings will take place on the third Thursday of each month with the exception of December (no meeting) and March where the proximity of Easter makes the 2nd Thursday more practical.
The meetings are open to all, not just Members of ISSES, and you are encouraged to bring along as many interested friends as possible. Apart from the formal element of the meeting the Quinborne Community Centre boasts a bar, with very modest prices, which provides an excellent opportunity for attendees to have a drink and a natter after the meeting. Please note that to cover the cost of hiring the room a small donation of £3/head will be appreciated.
Programme
November 15th A Wide Variety of Stationary Steam Engines - Part 2 - Chris Allen
Continuing on from September's meeting Chris will complete his talk with part 2 on the subject. The format of the talk will be the same as before with positive encouragement of audience participation and Q&A. This was well received in September so promises be a most interesting continuation.
December No Meeting
January 17th Uses of Steam Power in the Bristol Region - Paul Stephens
This illustrated talk will look briefly at the various industries around Bristol that used steam power for more than two hundred years. The talk draws heavily on the photos taken by the late George Watkins together with others from a number of additional sources. It includes some modern photos of things that might still be seen in, generally, the south-west of England.
February 21st King Coal - Alan Hill
Alan has had an interest in Coal mining history for many years. This talk should include something for everyone with an interest in coal mining history.
March 13th Steam in California - Chris Hodrien
The California oil industry is probably about the last place on earth that you would expect to find steam engines operating. But as late as 1984, two hot crude oil pipelines from the famous Bakersfield oilfields traversing across the coast mountain ranges to an export terminal at St Luis Obispo were pumped and heated entirely by steam, using oil from the pipelines as fuel. Chris Hodrien will share his slides and experiences from his study visit to the lines with local ISSES member Bill Sawyer back in 1984 while on work assignment in Los Angeles. This was originally written up in Stationary Power No. 6 (1989). If possible copies will be available to purchase on the night.
April 17th Members' slides and curiosities.
An opportunity to bring along your own slides, photos or other curiosities for others to see. These need not be restricted to steam engineering but anything else just so long as it has some interest to those interested in steam or other technical/industrial history.
Please note All meetings will start at 7:30p.m. and take place in Room 4 at the Community Centre. March will be an exception when Room 2 as been assigned to us.
