How are the chains wound? On a ship's windless the alternate links are at
right angles to each other and slot into gaps around the circumferance of
the "gypsy", the horizontal drum that is connected to a winch. From this
they drop down into the cable locker where they "self stow" in a big pile.
Could the horizontal struts have anything to do with the winding method?
And...as to the "big knot" I have always heard it refered to as a "pile of
Bu****s" !!!!!!
