In England, it is policy to discharge women who have had an
uncomplicated birth and a healthy baby quickly after birth.

See Tables 8 and 9. In the financial year April 2005 to March 2006, 51
per cent of women left hospital the same day or the next day.
Most of the research is relative. In other words, it relates to the
effect of women being discharged sooner than the country's norm.
A point to bear in mind is whether further care is available after
discharge. In our country women are routinely visited at home by
community midwives after discharge, although the extent of this is being
reduced because of financial cuts.
