Alternatively, google Pinyinput and download for free. This is a
really easy way to input diacritics (tones). Type in the word followed
by 1,2,3,4 and the tone appears above the correct vowel. Great,
because you can also type this directly into PowerPoint! At last! A
programme that makes our lives a little easier and cuts down on time
wasted copying and pasting from Word.
If you have Windows XP, then the Asian fonts are already in the
package, you just have to install them. Once installed, for glossing
characters with pinyin and tones, highlight the character, go to
Format, Asian Format, Phonetic Guide and this will automatically
generate the pinyin. Click OK and you're laughing!
Hope this is useful to some people out there frustrated with the old
method of Insert, Symbol, choose the diacritic, input. Takes forever!

I have been using this website for typing
pinyin,
http://www.ccsf.edu/Resources/homeLR.shtml
go to
Language Centre
go to
Foreign Language Programs
go to
Chinese
go to
Language-Learning and Culture Links
go to
Chinese Computing
go to
Pinyin to Unicode
type zhong1guo2 and press 'convert',
and you will get
Zhōngguó
and then copy and past to
your worksheet
