Who's Watching Your Space?
The first international OCLC library symposium
Online Information Show, Kensington Olympia, London
Wednesday 5th December, 2-5 pm
On Wednesday 5th December, OCLC is to hold its first international
symposium based on its newly-published international research study on
social networking. The study has surveyed over 6000 users in the UK,
US, Japan, Canada, Germany and France to find out more about their
digital lives.
The results are thought-provoking.
* UK users are conversing in chat rooms more than their
counterparts in the US.
* The UK polled the highest percentage out of any country polled,
when asked about usage of social media sites.
* We blog less than the US, Japan, Canada and France.
So, what can we take away from this study that will help us to define
our services in the future? To find out more about the report and to
get some alternative takes on this subject area, OCLC would like to
invite you to this free event.
Speaker line-up:
John Naughton, Professor of the Public Understanding of Technology at
the Open University, journalist for the Observer and author, having
written about the Internet for many years.
John will review the whole concept of social networking - what it is,
where it came from, why all the media frenzy and what it means to
today's library. Then he will look at the future - what will happen
next?
Matt Brown, Editor of Nature Network and blogger, will then present the
'how' using his experience of creating a maturing site from one
community's perspective. Matt is in the ideal position to offer us his
views on the pros and cons, the pitfalls and how to make a success out
of social networking.
Finally, Cathy de Rosa, VP of Global Marketing for OCLC, will present
the results from "Sharing Privacy and Trust in our Networked World".
Cathy will review the findings from this report and draw insights from
it, that libraries can use in adapting their services for the future.
