Subject: Re: [CORECONTENT] NLH Search 2.0
Dear colleagues,
In response to the recent concerns expressed re the NLH search interface, I
think it's worth clarifying our development plans for search 2.0. The key
message I would like to get across is that we are not planning to replace
the Ovid and Ebsco advanced search interfaces with a simple federated
search. We aim to provide a single interface to the databases provided by
these suppliers, but the underlying search functionality will be that
provided by those database suppliers.
The aim of Search 2.0 is to take all the search functionally on the NLH
website in house, thereby replacing the rather inefficient federated search
offered by SSE, with quicker, more accurate, hub page based searches that
are fit for purpose. This work is currently ongoing and much of this
functionality has already be released on the NLH site, e.g. the For Patients
hub page, images search, guidance hub page. This is because we recognise
that federated search has real limitations and that rich results are best
found through searching content in a way that is best suited to that type of
content.
The main part of this development programme is, however, the intergration of
bibliographic database searching. Here we are taking all the search
functionality offered by the databases providers (i.e. Ovid and Ebsco) and
fitting an NLH user interface to the the API (Application Programming
Interface) delivered by those providers. This enables us to offer all the
advanced search functionality provided by the database provider, the only
difference being the look and feel of the user interface. The benefit of
this is that it enables us to put the same interface onto databases
delivered through different suppliers, giving us a single interface to
search and train against.
Full details of the development plan, with timescales and contact details,
is available at:
http://www.library.nhs.uk/nlhdocs/search_2_0_newsletter_final.pdf.
Currently with have a working example of simple search available at:
http://beta.library.nhs.uk/booksandjournalsbeta/. I know many of you have
already viewed this site and helped test the functionality. Please note,
this is just the first of many beta releases and offers simple search ONLY.
Advanced Search functionality will be made available in the next release.
If anyone is interested in keeping up to date with progress on the
development of search 2.0, we have established a development mailing list.
To sign up, go to http://www.mailtalk.ac.uk/nlh-development/. We will be
using this list to issue news of new releases and co-ordinate testing of
each piece of additional functionality as it is released. We will also be
discussing the NLH search at the current NLH workshops.
Best wishes, Vicky
