italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Dear all
a footnote to George's reply. According to the British Library
catalogue, all the editions of Cary's Dante were published with the
English text only, with two exceptions: the first is the Inferno in 2
volumes published by James Carpenter (1805-6), described by George, and
the second is the complete Divine Comedy, published by Nonesuch Press
(London) in 1928, with the Italian text edited by Mario Casella.
Best wishes

italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Dear Aliette,
Thank you for posting your query to the italian-studies list. I don't
have my complete notes to hand, but I would suggest trying to locate the
following:
*The Inferno of Dante Alighieri : canto I-XXXIV, with a translation in
English blank verse, notes, and a life of the author.* By Henry Francis
Cary. London: Printed for James Carpenter, 1805-1806. Italian and
English on opposite pages. 2 v. (v. 1 Canto I-XVII.--v. 2. Canto
XVIII-XXXIV.)
Of related interest there is: Foscolo, Ugo. 'Dante'. *The Edinburgh
Review or Critical Journal*, vol. 29, no. 58, February 1818, pp.
453-474; this contains a review of Biagioli's edition of Dante, and of
Cary's translation of the *Commedia*.
You could also look at:
*La divina commedia, or The divine vision of Dante Alighieri in Italian
& English*. The Italian text ed. is by Mario Casella, with the English
version of H. F. Cary. [London]: Nonesuch, 1928.
The final word on Cary's translation is:
Crisafulli, Edoardo. *The vision of Dante. Cary's translation of The
Divine Comedy.* Market Harborough, UK : Troubador, 2003. [series
'Troubador Italian Studies']. (I don't have this book with me as I
write, but I'm sure you will find more references in this book.)
Best wishes,
George Ferzoco
